Week 5: WebFeat

PBCLS launched WebFeat in March 2008. The link to WebFeat is prominently featured on our website:

WebFeat enables patrons to simultaneously search the library catalog and up to 50 databases; this is known as a Federated search .

Webfeat allows databases to be combined into subject categories. Prior to WebFeat a patron searching for information relating to health had to search each of our three medical databases (Consumer Health Complete, Health Reference Center, and Health & Wellness Resource Center) individually. Now they only need to select the health category and enter their search terms once. Results will be returned from all the three databases.

WebFeat provides a seamless search experience which is very similar to other widely used search engines such as Google. The advantage is that instead of getting random and unreliable information from the Internet, all of the search results from WebFeat contain reliable information retrieved from our collection of authoritative databases.

Discovery Exercise:
  1. Take a look around WebFeat.
  2. Look up your hometown. Did you find anything interesting?
  3. Tell us what you found in your blog.
